After Dinner:
Usually, kids
(err...actually, "Young Adults") finish their meals
disgustingly fast, so one has to keep them
occupied while the Moms and Pops are still ingesting, digesting, and soon
to be investing in antacid. If the young-ones are not kept interested, a riot may ensue. Therefore,
games and activities
are the thing. I might like to run a relay, such as 'Pyramid 21' or a
Lip-Sync contest; Something that can
entertain but not disturb the grown-ups (More about games and
activities in a second).
The night
might even kick off with a traditional Hora, starting at a slow pace, but then speeding up to an enjoyable rate, at which point, someone
fetches a chair so that all the strong strapping family members
lift up the guest of
honor (plus anyone else; usually immediate family members) into the air as everyone cheers their name. Watch your head!
But they way I like to do it, the grown-ups are kicked off the dance floor so that the Mitzvah and friends can participate in their very own Hora, danced to a blazing-speed (and liability insurance challenging) techno version of Hava Nagila.
As for general dancing, general
is the operative word because we want to make sure that there is something for everyone. Slow songs, fast songs, new songs, old songs...all edited for
"public consumption"; Which means: now the kids will get to dance to all those crazy rap songs that they like to hear
that you keep telling them to turn down at
home (Don't worry...I won't play
too many; I won't have time)! Guests and family members may request to dance to other
stuff (keep in mind I love taking requests with priority to the Mitzvah and
their parents), such as The Cha Cha
Slide,
Electric
Slide, Twist, maybe even a Polka (for those who are
not quite young, but young at heart), Swing, Oldies, Motown,
Hokey
Pokey, Conga,
Y.M.C.A.,
The
Train, Cotton-Eyed
Joe, Locomotion, and The Ketchup Dance
(Another ditty from Spain). I never keep a "set" or "song
list"...but I CAN show you a Typical Song List
(Most popular requests).
It would be virtually impossible to have time to play every interactive song available due to the enormity of my music collection. And you know how kids (again...young adults) love to request their songs (Grown-ups too)! Fear not...The kids can be patient as we dance to maybe one Sinatra tune (or two). Like I said: "Something to please everyone". You can't go wrong!
