Want To Keep It Simple?
Here's
How You Might Want Your Simcha To Go:
Alright. Now, let's put your mind at ease by talking about what
most folks ask me to do for them and their guests when it comes to the Mitzvah
celebration:
There's no real "written in stone" schedule for a Mitzvah. There are many common components, but unlike a wedding, the workings can pretty much be placed anywhere without any loss of logic.
Folks usually have a time for
guests to
arrive (sometimes into a separate room), usually referred to as a 'cocktail
hour', where music is played upbeat and mixed for everyone, but to a minimum
volume so all can mingle as they nosh and kibbitz (Eat & talk).
When the kids arrive into the dining/reception area, something always has to be going on; The music will be playing, upbeat, songs the kids know and love, lots of action, lights going, perhaps prizes being handed (or thrown) out; Things are getting started. Everyone dances.
You
and/or your Rabbi may require a short Havadalah service (Small ceremony to separate
the holiness of the Sabbath from the rest of the week)
You may need to consult with your
Rabbi since this semi-requirement differs from
Rabbi to Rabbi, family to family and shul to shul.
Dinner can begin to be served if you are
one (like I) who believes that kids won't be happy until they eat. Or you can opt to get things going with such simcha ingredients as a
Grand Introduction that might include all the immediate family
members
and / or just the guest of honor. After the
Mitzvah has been made to look like Royalty, perhaps Mom or Dad would make a short
welcome speech before we get into a traditional candle-lighting
ceremony. Grandpa, Dad, the Mitzvah or the Rabbi
could come up to perform the
Motzi (blessing of the bread).
