Why Is It So Many DJs Don't Pick Up Their Phones?

I can pretty much guaran-darn-tee that these folks will pick up their phones.

At the risk of marketing negatively, there are times many mobile entertainers (myself included) do not answer their telephones personally. While on a hunt to speak to a DJ for info and/or pricing, you may have noticed a trend of answering machine greetings, as opposed to a live body. Come on...We all know darn well that we can't ALL be "with another client" at the same time (Frankly, I'm getting sick of this phrasing, and prefer not to emulate it).

So, why is this?

The most popular reason, according to Robb Smith of the Florida Academy of Mobile Entertainers, is because many established DJs feel they don't need to personally answer their phones because they have enough clientele.

Another likely reason, put forth by mobile entertainment guru Mark Ferrell of Disc-Jockey America, is that the industry is dotted with enterprises run by amateurs (and part-time professionals)  who are unable to answer their phones because they are working at their "real jobs" (or "Nine-To-Fivers"). I.E., mobile entertainment is actually their second job (Let's face it...making your interests second). If you get an answering machine, there's a likelihood of that DJ actually being OUT working a main 40-hour-a-week job.

Another dynamic I've discovered is that there is the existence of DJs who wish to create an "air" of exclusivity, therefore by letting their answering machines (in some cases, answering services) screen callers before they decide whether there is value in returning their call.

If ever you encounter the rare occasion of an answering machine when attempting to contact me, the reason will surely be one of the following:

  1. I'm out doing a performance (typically Friday and Saturday evenings).

  2. Yes, I actually DO have other clients, and I may actually be devoting an hour (or two) of my time to them.

  3. I forgot to forward my phone.

  4. I have suddenly become deceased.
