Let's Take A Tongue-In-Cheek Look At The Difference Between
A Full-Time Professional Entertainer/MC/DJ
And One That's Not:

At the risk of what may be perceived to be "negative marketing"...
Let's educate those who may not be aware of what the facts are within the DJ world.

According to the American Disc-Jockey Association...

Disc Jockey rates vary based on talent, experience, emcee ability, service, coordination, equipment needed, music knowledge, mixing ability and personality.

Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging from $350.00 to over $5,000.00 with a national average of $1,200.00 for a 4-6 hour booking. The best price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. As a matter of fact, surveys conclude that nearly 100% of brides would have spent more money on their entertainment and made it their #1 priority in hindsight.

A full-service disc jockey company will normally invest 12 to 30 hours to your special event but it may appear that you are only paying for "4 hours". Consultations, music purchasing & editing, preparation, set-up and tear-down, education and other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasion.

There is generally TWO types of "DJs" (I put this in parentheses because the word "DJ" is for lack of a better term, since what we do is MORE than just DJ...I'm an Entertainer and an EmCee / Master Of Ceremonies...DJ equipment is only ONE TOOL that is used to create the atmosphere desired):

  1. The "Weekend Warrior"; For the most part dependable, but debatable whether actually should be considered "professional" because he's not full-time;  "DJing" is only a part-time job (You usually can tell this because he's the one that always let's his machine pick up because he normally can't take calls at his "real" job); This person (in my opinion) can not have the time to put adequate care into a client.

According to wedding dj guru Peter Merry of Merry Weddings in Southern California, "64% of the Mobile DJ industry are made up of part-timers. Not that there's really anything wrong with that, but it is safe to say that the vast majority that do it "on the side" do it as a hobby.  Most part-time entertainers are NOT delivering the best quality of service. Of course, there are the rare exceptions of part-timers who deliver fantastic service...AND there also the rare exceptions among full-timers who don't deliver good service...but, BOTH are exceptions to the rule."

The reasons why there are individuals who may tend to charge less than the average is because
A: He needs to get the "gigs" at any cost
B: He's not aware of the professional rate
C: Feels a lower rate is "fair" to his client and to himself. This guy literally can quote you by the hour because that is typically all he works when it comes to being an "Entertainer" AND feels he can get away with plugging in a home stereo system and winging it with his proud collection of freely downloaded mp3s and classic rock CDs amassed over the years.

Believe me, I know...I used to do this too...Most of us started out this way. But I've become educated and changed my ways.

The  "DJ" described above has been of late referred to by the DJ world as what we affectionately like to call a "Bottom-feeder".

If you feel confidence with any vendor (whether they might fit this description or not), then by all means hire that person...As long as you feel comfortable.

  2. The "Full-Time Professional"; [MONDAY THRU FRIDAY 24/7]...NOTHING ELSE; NO SECOND JOB; Jeffrey Evan Mufson - by - Brian C. Idocks; www.briancidocks.comThe full-time professional is experienced (over 23 years in my case), trained (continuously in so many ways), licensed, insured, AND may even guarantee their work.

Brian C Idocks PhotographicsOne makes a realization that in order to consistently satisfy a client, there are certain things that need to be done...and a certain rate has to be charged in order to support the quality (and perhaps also the credibility) of service offered.

I impart no "frills" in my rate...No dancing girls (Although, I can get them), no BIG screens (again, I can get them), no super-duper systems that can drive a ROCK CONCERT (Naturally, I can get this too, if needed)... It's just lil' ol' me and my system.

So...when a shopper  avers that they don't need anything "special" or "extra", and "don't really need too much" or "We just need someone to come in and play music", remember that this thought process is flawed because a Full-Time Professional does NOT charge what he does because of any "frills" or unnecessary add-ons like a few other companies may tend to offer...The full-time professional charges what he charges because of his guaranteed experience, talent, professionalism, heart and (of course) personalized individuality

We take the time necessary to do the job right...The way YOU want it to be done.

~*~

By the way...Consider which of the two above types of Entertainers would you think hold the greater odds of NOT showing up on the day of your event?

Not that I'm trying to negatively scare anyone...
