Disc Jockeys
Industry Overview
ACCORDING TO PROFILE-AMERICA INC.
|
There are three major kinds of disc jockeys (DJs): Mobile, Radio, and Club. They all share the common goal of entertaining a diverse crowd of people by playing recorded music. An experienced disc jockey has a refined sense of timing and an ability to blend song requests with songs that will appropriately motivate the crowd to dance. Mobile DJs are the most common. They typically work parties and special events on site. Using professional sound and lighting equipment, DJs play music that is appropriate to the type of function for which they were booked. Often they include entertaining banter between songs. Weddings are the most popular functions at which DJs play, according to the editor of Mobile Beat magazine. Other popular events that use DJ services include corporate parties, birthday and anniversary parties, Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, and school dances. Many DJ services also offer packages for theme parties or special events. Examples include Hawaiian luaus, "divorce parties," and Sweet 16 birthday dances. According to the National Association of Mobile Entertainers (NAME), there are approximately 60,000 working mobile DJs in the U.S. NAME classifies DJs in the following three categories:
Some DJs use a booking agent, who receives a percentage of the disc jockey's fee. Others who work on a full-time basis run a "multi-unit" operation where they book gigs for themselves as well as for other disc jockeys and related entertainers. |
Most DJs can be classified as "full part-timers," as illustrated in the following chart:

Issues & Trends After a decade of industry growth in the 1990s, disc jockeys faced a difficult year in 2001, according to an article in The New York Times (December 19, 2001). Those who rely on corporate parties for a substantial amount of their business struggled to make ends meet as companies canceled or scaled back holiday celebrations in the wake of the economic recession and the tragic events of September 11th. Those companies which did book entertainment often requested reduced-cost options. The DJs who were interviewed by Profile America, Inc. expressed their concerns about a few issues in the industry, which they consider obstacles to growth, including:
Many DJ services are joining industry associations, such as the American Disc Jockey Association, in an effort to educate the public and raise standards within the industry. Membership reflects professionalism and increases the public's level of confidence in a DJ's work. Members of good standing in both associations are asked to follow a strict code of business ethics and uphold high levels of customer service. The editor of Mobile Beat Magazine reported that in the competition for event bookings between DJs and live bands, DJs are definitely winning. Some of the reasons
|
that he said disc jockeys are preferred over a live band or a "juke box" follow:
The DJ service industry is a competitive one, and it can be challenging for consumers to find the disc jockey who is best suited for their events. When contacting a booking agent or a multi-unit operator, it is important to inquire about the specific disc jockey who will be playing the event. Some of the questions consumers may want to ask when searching for a disc jockey include:
