A Wedding Perspective
Do you want your wedding reception to be a PARTY function or a FOOD function?
A
food function is a reception that focuses on dinner rather than a party.
Wedding receptions often become food functions due to poor entertainment
creating a poor atmosphere.
A party function features great food complimented by first class entertainment. This combination leads to a successful event with something for everyone. Great music and entertainment should compliment, not overshadow the dining experience. A professional Emcee should be a proper and fun host without being a clown or a distraction. Attention should be focused on the bride and groom along with their families and friends.
Many times the entertainment is overlooked as an important part of the success of an event. Please consider these factors when weighing your options for choosing entertainment.
Loud or inappropriate dinner music can ruin the best food and dining atmosphere.
An unprofessional Emcee can diminish the sincerity of the day's events. A wedding is no place for a DJ to be practicing his or her "Star Search" routine.
Your wedding DJ is responsible for coordinating the entire reception. From lining up the bridal party to the last dance, a good professional DJ will ensure a smooth flow including the dinner, photographs, and video along with the formalities such as special dances and other traditional events.
Not playing music for all of the styles and age groups will offend and deter guests from joining the party.
The music should reflect your own taste and also cater to the guests as a whole. A professional disc jockey will not play an inappropriate song for the pleasure of one guest. They must keep in mind that the music and party is for everyone to enjoy.
If price is a large issue in choosing your DJ, please consider this;
Poor entertainment results in photographs and a video of a poor party. Photography and video are a major part of the wedding budget and could also be a costly reminder of a good wedding but a bad party.
The wedding cake, the veggie platter, the sales tax and the gratuity individually, often cost more than the entertainment.
Entertainment is on average about 3-5 % of the total budget of the wedding. What percent of a function's success or failure is based on the entertainment?
If you spend 15,000 dollars for your 5 hour wedding reception, and your guests leave even one hour before the end due to unprofessional entertainment, did you waste 3,000 dollars?
If your 300 dollar bargain DJ does not show up to the reception, do you sue him for 300 dollars or do you sue him for the entire amount of the reception? If you think you should sue him for the latter, your perceived value of your reception entertainment is much greater than 300 dollars.
The moral of the story is entertainment has a major impact on the total success or failure of your reception. No matter what you end up paying for your entertainment, the disc jockey is still responsible for the majority of the flow and atmosphere of your event. It's worth doing your homework when hiring your disc jockey. High prices do not guarantee good entertainment. However, hiring an established and professional DJ that you have confidence in is Priceless.
Thank
you to the Connecticut DJs for such an eloquent point of view.
